Saiful Apek - Lead actor

The greatest problem that this writer had to prepare the Persona column this time was not to get a successful artist but to get a human photo of a man named Saiful Apek in serious pose! Understanding the hilarious Saiful or his real name Saiful Azam Mohd Yusoff. All his actions will get you in stitches.

But honestly, Apek admits that he's not a 24/7 comedian. As a committed man to the work of art on stage or behind the scenes especially with the formation of his own production company, Gitu-Gitu Productions Sdn Bhd, this Selangor born has very big appetite for success and high hopes of developing the local film industry.

From his appearance, this actor, comedian, singer and host is truly conceited. His long hair is either tied in a ponytail or let loose. He loves wearing hats and is never seen without his glasses.

Interestingly Saiful actually has two dates of birth. On his birth certificate and identification, it is stated as 15 August 1969 but in actual fact, his birthday falls on 12 May 1969.

This mix up arose when he was forced to be given up for adoption on 13 May 1969 due to inevitable circumstances and his birth was registered later.

All those are old stories, at the age of 21, Saiful finally managed to trace his natural parents.

In terms of acting, of late, Saiful's face is seen in the comedy produced by Metrowealth Movies, Anak Mami Kembali. This light comedy successfully revived Saiful's funny character.

And so this is the awe of this artist whose undiscovered talent was first seen on the first season of Sinaran Pasport Kegemilangan in 1994 on TV3.

Besides that, Saiful also appeared in several other films like Senario The Movie (1999), Senario Lagi (2000), Lagi-Lagi Senario (2001) and Lang Buana(2002).

Always a fighter, among the awards which he has garnered, Gold VCD Award (Konsert Pop Orkestra KL Bersama Senario VCD which sold more than 25,000 units), Double Platinum Award (Senario 2 Album which sold more than 100,000 units), Platinum Award (Senario 3 Album which sold more than 50,000 units), Berita Harian Most Popular Artist Award 2001 (Best Group).

Known as the Most Popular Male Comedian and Most Popular Artist ABP-BH 2002, Apek's popularity is proven. The question is will Saiful continue to reign in the next ABP-BH?

What's Next?

A 13-EPISODE TV series, back-to-school range and a monthly-edition comic book. These are some of the plans that have been lined up by KRU Films Sdn Bhd for its record-breaking feature film debut, Cicakman.

GROWING up, actor-singer Yusry Abdul Halim was a huge fan of Superman. The actor tells FARIDUL ANWAR FARINORDIN that he had always dreamed he would make a movie about an ordinary-looking guy with secret superhuman abilities. Well, he finally made it... his feature film directorial debut, Cicakman, opened nationwide early this month. Q: With 500 CGI (computer-generated imagery) shots, the film broke new ground for a local movie. How do you feel about that?

CICAKMAN Directed by Yusry Abdul Halim Starring Saiful Apek, Fasha Sandha, Aznil Nawawi, Yasmin Hani, AC Mizal, Adlin Aman Ramlie, THE only good thing about this movie is Yusry's tireless dedication in pushing the art of local movie-making - the technical aspects - to another level. And he did a commendable job.

KRU's Yusry Abdul Halim talks about his experience directing his first film, Cicakman, and what it takes for CGI movies to flourish in Malaysia. Yusry Abdul Halim, a.k.a. Yusry KRU, will finally realise his lifelong dream of making a film with computer-generated image (CGI) elements.

Cicakman (pronounced chee-chuck-man) is the first Malaysian comedy-superhero movie that created with almost 40% of CGI. It stars Malaysian comedian Saiful Apek. The name "Cicakman" literallly translates to "Gekko-man"

Cicakman could be a hit?

ALOR STAR: Malaysia’s very first funny superhero – The Cicak Man – is set to make an impact with movie goers.

Lead actor Saiful Apek said the movie, which would be released during Hari Raya, had the potential to penetrate the Western market.

“This movie is so full of high-quality special effects that even Putrajaya, where the film was shot, looks different on screen,” he said.

“In the movie, Putrajaya is called Metrofulus (fulus means money in Arabic). Those who watch the movie will not even recognise the location. With special effects, maple trees are added to the landscape and big ships can be seen plying the river. There are also winter scenes.

“Technology in film-making has made it possible to create out-of-this-world scenes,” he said after making an appearance at Alor Star Mall, where Digi’s Pesta GeGeRiuh 2006 is held.

The event was part of a roadshow to showcase Anugerah ERA artistes including Apek, Yassin, Shanna and Pushpa, who are actors in the Ejen 016 television series. Other Era artistes who made appearances are Farahwahida, Samir, Junio Hustle, and Pretty Ugly.

Digi is the main sponsor of Anugerah Era, which will be held in Bukit Jalil on Saturday.

Saiful said Cicak Man proves that Malaysia had creative talents to take the filming industry far.

Cicak Man is one of my greatest achievements in my 12-year acting career. It is high time we catch up with Hollywood, Bollywood and Hong Kong,” he said, adding that he had acted in 38 films.

On the Ejen 016 series screened over TV3 on Wednesdays at 9.30pm, Saiful, who also stars in it, said the show was also full of special effects.
